Does it appear on the list of connected USB devices (ls usb) when plugged in 
and then powered on ?

Not sure of the exact model, I took a Nexus 7 apart to replace a battery and no 
special tools were required.

 is for something with the same name from a different vendor, you'll see if 
it's the same gadget or not.

In terms of "carry in repairs" I have had good experience with the PC repair 
guys in Ink2Print in the Westgate Arcade - admittedly not with tablets. They'll 
give you a price before proceeding and tell you if it isn't economic or out of 
their scope.
