Hi Judy

I think you are onto the solution. I also use Mint as I thinks its the
best current linux distribution (evryone has there own favourite!) It is
17.1 now btw.

Before I install LM17.1 I always have to go into the uefi BIOS and
disable secure boot. Googling this indicates the following should work
for your computer:

To enter the BIOS setup screen repeatedly press the esc key during
bootup until you get the setup menu. It may take a few goes to catch.
Then press f10 to enter BIOS setup. Use right arrow to enter system
setup and then select boot options. Select secure boot and disable it.

Do not delete the secure boot keys.

If this is not clear then check out this link, about half way down:
http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-ENVY-6-Ultrabook/5296040/model/5316497/document/c03653226

There is also a legacy support option that may need to be selected.

I also disable fast boot.

You can respond to me directly if I can be of more help. Let the mailing
list know how you get on.

You do not mention your disability requirements. I cannot speak for the
organisers, but I am sure they would like to know if there is anything
they could do to help you visit the club, by far the best place to solve
your problem.

I am also sure no-one would accept payment but good of you to offer.

Best of luck.

Clive
