Hello Judy, Welcome to the Linux Group. We're a friendly bunch and there's a lot of expertise amongst us - which actually doesn't include me. I've been using Linux for several years now and I still don't know enough to fill a postage stamp.
However, that may be because I don't use it as my main OS. I abandoned Windows (never to return) in late 2009 when I bought an iMac. So with iPhone, iMacs and iPads my wife and I have become part of the Apple ecosystem (except her phone which is Windows - don't ask). However, I do have an HP laptop which came originally with the awful Vista which was so bad I eventually formatted the hard drive and put Ubuntu on it in order to dabble with Linux. To be honest I haven't made much progress - but it's enjoyable fiddling about with it - and in fairness I haven't spent enough time on it. I tried Mint which I liked but two things spoiled it for me. It didn't seem to like my graphics card so a couple of programs didn't run. And also, it doesn't seem to have an upgrade path. You seem to need to install each version afresh and this messes up your stuff unless it's on a separate partition which is beyond my abilities unaided. I'd personally recommend coming along to the monthly sessions at Linx in Peterborough where we spend a relaxed evening sitting about chatting and fiddling with any computer kit we've brought along. Or just looking and chatting if you haven't brought anything. Coffee and Cola is also there for small price. You'd be welcome. We rarely have speakers or teaching sessions though we're open to them when offered. But if you don't fancy the face-to-face, or if you can't get into town, this list is a relaxed place to find answers. Though probably not from me!
