Timothy,
Monitors are repairable!  If they fail to switch or just appear dark it
is often a power supply fault.  The capacitors dry out after a few
thousand hours operation.  Let me know the model details of your failed
screens and I may be able to help; I have repaired five in the last year
without any problems.
