2rx16 pc3-8500s-7-10-1a works 1 GB
2rx8 pc3-8500s-07-10-f2 doesn't 2 GB

IF the x16 and x8 refers to the number of ICs on the stick then the
non-working sticks have 8 * 256M and the working 16 * 64M which may be
part of the story.

what manufacturer of the RAM sticks ?
