To confirm, you should *never* run alsaconf unless you have a non-PnP ISA sound card. This is why the tool has been removed, as people were running it when they shouldn't: http://anonscm.debian.org/viewvc/pkg-alsa/trunk/alsa-utils/debian/NEWS?revision=2199&view=markup The problem in Iain's case was one of group membership (audio & cdrom).
