I use Claws which is a descendant of Sylpheed; I've had similar
problems to you, and it does seem that every IMAP client manages to
largely miss the point of IMAP and instead spend half the time trying
to index all your subject headers or something. 

Claws seems to cope better with big mailboxes than most, but it is very
clunky in interface. It's in Ubuntu's repositories but I've no idea if
there's a Windows distribution of it.
