Hi,

I've been quite non-plussed about Ubuntu and Linux for desktops generally. The
offerings have always (to me) been a bit gimicky - using the latest new
graphical developments to throw into the mix without thinking about combining
usability, stability and a professional look and feel. I usually use VMware
Player to mess around with Linux (mostly for server apps) but had a problem
with getting VMware to recognise the SD cards I use for my R-Pi's. I decided to
free up some space on my Windows laptop and installed Ubuntu 12.04 as a
dual-boot option. I am so impressed! I feel like the Ubuntu and GNOME teams
have finally got it right. The Unity interface takes a bit of getting used to,
but seems to be well thought out once you do. One of my MAJOR gripes is fonts -
previous incarnations have had really chunky or badly rendered fonts. I was
firmly in the KDE camp until the joke which is version 4 came out, but I have
to now consider myself a GNOME convert. I thought it would be a long time
before Linux was a viable desktop OS, but with Ubuntu 12.04 I think that day
has finally arrived!
