Hi All

I am hitting some issues when trying to share a USB printer and a USB
printer/scanner that are attached to a server that I have just put together.

The server is a simple small office file/print setup on an Ubuntu Server (10.04
LTS) base. I have installed Samba and Cups, configured static IP's, users, smb
users and passwords etc and have set up the Samba shares which I can access
correctly from both Windows and Linux machines. So up to that point Samba
appears to be configured correctly.

The problems start when I try and share either of the printers, both of which
are HP variants and both of which I have had fully working on this version of
Ubuntu (desktop not server) in the past. I found some strange entries in the
"smb.conf" which, when researched on the internet I found to be a feature where
you can offer your printers for sharing through Samba (via smb.conf) rather
than directly through the Cups interface as usual. However, every time I
uncommented the relevant lines in "smb.conf" and restarted smbd, I lost access
to the shares and was getting "not authorised" type error messages. If I
re-comment the entries and restart smbd again, I immediately regain access to
the shares.

Having tried various help files and tutorials on the web I decided to give up
and set them up manually through the Cups interface. When I navigated to
http://<server-name or IP>:631 I found that I can only view the Cups main page,
not access any of the pages from the links such as "Manage Server, Manage Jobs"
etc, which may be the underlying problem for the issues outlined above. When I
click a link I get a "page not found" error, which is odd because I would
expect to see a "not authorised" type message!

Can anyone point me in the right direction as to how to put all of this right?

On a side issue, I really want to be able to share the scanner function of the
printer/scanner centrally, as well as the print function. So far I have failed.
Has anyone got a scanner set up as a share on a server and if so how did you
get it to work?

Cheers

Stu
