UPDATE Ok bit of a convoluted fix, but, created a ISO image of the physical DVD installation media, attached it to the virtual machine (instead of attaching the physical drive) and it works a treat.
I used IMG Burn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download Hope this helps any other who got stuck.
