MAPI is Microsoft's protocol for talking to Exchange servers - it's a
proprietary protocol and as such isn't particularly well supported by
things that don't have the permission of Microsoft.

Evolution tries to support it, but last time I used it (a couple of
years ago) the exchange translator bit of it crashed incredibly
frequently (of the order of every few hours). It might be better now. 

Exchange servers can talk IMAP or POP3 though. Your life will be much
easier if you can persuade whoever looks after the server to turn IMAP
on.
