it's a firmware (or jumper ?) setting on the drive I think that gets

a clue about the drive make / type may help :-)

Samsung's ES tool 
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/support/downloads/support_in_es.html 
allows you to see the native size and current size, and make changes.
