I've only posted to this list once before (bit of a lurker) but I have
been to two or three meetings more recently (sometimes with my twin
boys). Some of you may also know Jon Gowar, Craig Nicholson and others
who also work here and attend PLUG meetings.
I've actually enjoyed myself, not doing much, (although on the odd
occasion we've had a presentation, like last time it was nice to have
something to focus the evening a bit. (Viewing the new Ubuntu Beta)
I was wondering if anyone would be interested in arranging a meeting
and/or tour of our data centre near March, Cambs. We could either hold
one of the regular meetings here, or we could have an additional evening
one-off?
I think it should be of interest for a number of reasons. First, our
entire operations run and use Linux only (all the staff use Linux,
whether to do accounting or invoicing or otherwise). Also we host a few
hundred servers, and every one of those is running Linux (no Windows
allowed!)
It's interesting to see an operational data centre from a technical
point of view, We can show those who are interested our UPS electrical
systems, Generator, Air-con systems etc. Also the networking, switching
and cabling etc.
We have good connectivity here, as well as a kitchen and plenty of car
parking space.
The site is supposed to be slightly low-key and doesn't announce itself
with signs etc. Anyone attending would need to let me know in advance
and would need to bring photo ID for access.
This posting really is just to ascertain whether people have any
interest in this, if March seems a little too far away for people,
and/or if people think, if we do go ahead, we should do it in the place
of one of the regular meetings or as an additional event.
