Probably means you have lost your sources.list file, synaptic (and apt)
will need this to function.

Reply with the output of the following commands:-
ls -lash /etc/apt/
and
cat /etc/apt/sour<press 'tab' to complete>
n.b. Tab completing a good way to ensure a file exists, and remove
spelling ambiguities.
