Do you have links to tutorials like this? It may be they're trying to do something subtly different (eg using of=/dev/sdc1 to write to a single partition, which has the advantage of letting you create the partition to the size you want). But the Internet is a big place and there's plenty of tutorials out there that are just plain wrong!
