Better info here (in this case trying to recover an ext partition which 
was formatted as VFAT):

Definitely backup the whole disk as an image, but after that it looks 
like if you delete the partition then let TestDisk have a run at it then 
there's a good chance it'll find the NTFS data there.

Keep notes - this might be a good one to repeat at a PLUG meet if you're 
successful.
