Like most of these things, the popular perception is wrong.

Did you know that the entire premise for the TV programme QI is exactly that
- everything we think is a fact is invariably wrong - hence the minus scores
every week.

However, the 640K was very real and Acorn people used to laugh happily about
the 640K of reserved memory (I think it was called) that was a legacy from
DOS and ran far into the Windows generation of computers.

They called it the Trapped Rat and chuckled at how it restrained PCs while
Acorn machine had the freedom to fly.

Parents meanwhile said "Why don't you teach my child DOS because that's what
he'll be using when he leaves school". Classic case of missing the point,
much like today's parents and governments wordwide who see the Victorian
curriculum and SATs as education for the 21st century.

Ah me.
