Right. I'm doing a build for a little thing that will sit next to my
door and remind me to do stuff (please don't write in with lo-tech
alternatives, I'll have tried most of the ones you mention! ADHD can be
very interesting sometimes!) . The hardware will be a Small form factor
PC and a Lilliput touchscreen and Griffin powermate silver (it's like a
USB volume knob but I plan to use it for scrolling as well) plus at
least 1 arduino and a lot of sensors (so it knows when my front door
opens, for example).

Obviously this is a humungous project but what I'm planning on as 'Level
1' of the project is a basic touchscreen interface.

I'm planning to use PHP to generate the interface as my book on the
Arduino uses it as part of it's development environment so it minimises
the research I have to do. My test-install of Linux will be Xubuntu but
it still has too much desktop for what I want.

As I'm planning to run only the interface on this machine and that will
be web based I don't really need a desktop environment as such. Just a
single fullscreen window and possibly the ability to launch CLI as well.

I've looked into interfaces and currently Matchbox seems the best x
window manager for the purpose (I'm sure I could set up minimal if not
non-existent window frames) http://matchbox-project.org/ and as far as
I've seen has no toolbar or icons unless you want them. If anyone knows
of anything else that would be better than this then please let me know.

Now all I need to do is find a chromeless browser. (I was cursing Google
for naming their browser "Chrome" STUPID, STUPID! Ironic that the
principal Search Engine provider would do something that makes certain
searches ["Browser Chrome", "Chromeless Browser" etc. ] harder. They've
got a phone OS named Android, why didn't they call the browser 'Cyborg'
or something?!... ) I don't need a back button or reload or icons or any
toolbar at all, I don't need info on whether a page is loading or not.
If it doesn't load the (local) information instantly then it will be
obvious that I need to do something about it. I simply need a completely
blank window (or even some kind of fullscreen implementation) that will
display html generated by the PHP on my localhost. Some kind of CLI
based or setup method of setting up the homepage would obviously be
needed but I don't want it to look like a browser. I just want it to run
my code. So a chromeless browser or a means of setting up a browser to
launch with zero chrome (Konqueror? Firefox?) would be ideal. Any page
switching and interfacing could easily be written as part of the window.

Any help on whether this kind of thing is available and where I could
get it would be extremely useful. Also, when it comes to customising my
Linux would it be easier to:

Install Xubuntu, uninstall Xfce and then install Matchbox or
Do a custom install of Xubuntu, don't include Xfce and install Matchbox
or
Install a different version of Linux altogether?

Thanks in advance for any help with this project.
