Will be installing Xubuntu on my VIA microATX system sometime soon. I guess it's still x86 but it's a bit non-standard and I wanted to be part of the discussion ;)

I'm currently installing Ubuntu 8.10 on a Apple PowerMac G4(2 * PowerPC 450Mhz CPUs, 1.5Gb RAM, ATI AGP Graphics). Obviously, you need to use the PowerPC distribution on this machine. If you have installed Linux on non 'PC' hardware - what were your experiences? What distribution did you find that worked best? (Linux only - not Solaris on SPARC, HP-UX etc...) Yes, Gentoo Linux on PPC64 (Apple PowerMac 7,3: Dual G5 2.0GHz). Planning to run Gentoo Linux on a dual Itanium (IA64 1.4GHz) but that machine needs more work. Gentoo has a quite active PowerPC team, especially PPC64 as that is the architecture of the Playstation III. There are a few PowerPC-specific quirks that you'll have to get used to, but any good installation manual will explain them to you. For one, you'll be using yaboot instead of LILO or Grub. Also, you will be using mac-fdisk to partition. (For which in most cases no pretty GUI exists, unless of course parted is able to handle that now) Regards, Tony V. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
