Hi Florence,

I'm no expert with pheromone traps but I can speak to them some because we
implemented them last year. To your question if the pheromones attract other
species: I think this is possible. I've noticed that silverfish in particular
seem to be attracted to bait for dermestids. Based on our records, I don't
believe it's possible for any insect to be discouraged by the presence of
pheromones. For instance, this time last year we had about the same number of
silverfish logged in one particular area as we did the year before, when we
were not using pheromone traps. The presence of the pheromones did not have a
repellent effect on this non-target species and the numbers remained consistent.

Not sure where you're purchasing your traps but perhaps the experts at
https://www.insectslimited.com would have more insight to your particular
concerns? Best of luck! -Josie

Subject: [PestList] pheromone traps

Hello,

I have a question regarding pheromone traps:
These are designed to attract a specific insect species (for example, clothes
moths or carpet beetles). But is it possible for a pheromone trap targeting one
species to also attract other insect species — or, on the contrary, to have a
repellent effect on them?
In other words, could a pheromone trap specifically designed for one species
distort monitoring results by discouraging or failing to attract other insects
that are actually present in a collection ?
This would mean that targeted trapping doesn't necessarily provide a
representative overview of the actual insect biodiversity in a space.

Thank you in advance for any insights you can provide!
