Dear Tony,

Thank you for your quick and clear response. Thank you for the clarification, a
mite did not cross my mind. The gloves are indeed cotton and where not worn,
but there has never been a mouse sighting nor their droppings so an interesting
case. I will investigate further!

Onderwerp: Re: [PestList] insect on painting and gloves

Dear Mike
The creature on the painting is a mite (Acari) - there's not enough detail to
be sure of its identity, but I would suggest it is a predatory species, and
does not present a risk to the collection.
As the gloves appear to be made of cotton, the damage is unlikely to be an
insect pest. I would agree that mice are the most likely culprits, if
mechanical damage is ruled out.
Best wishes
Tony

Dear pestlisters,

Today one of our restorers found a very small insect on a lying painting. It
was not attached to the varnish, so we know it is relatively recent (the last
restauration was in 1980). The insect is a millimeter max two in length. I
cannot find anything resembling it on the different sources. To me it has some
similarities with a flea. Can anyone help getting me to get closer to
unraveling the species.

We also found a cotton glove with damage that appears to be from some insect or
perhaps a rodent. The holes are quit bick and gone trough both sides of the
glove which believes me to think a mice might be the culprit here?

Your help would be much appreciated,

With kind regards,
