Todd,

Administrators in museums and other institutions can try to outlaw or
discourage food in the workplace, but this rarely results in getting close to
the desired goal. Instead, it may make more sense to adopt a strategy that
acknowledges the inevitable (food in the workplace) but, provides a means to
try to separate food from pests.

The container might be a simple and inexpensive hard plastic bin with a
tight-fitting lid, or it might be more costly and substantial. If it is too
attractive, personnel might want to take it home rather than use it at work.

Even if food-secure containers are distributed, it would be wise for the pest
management personnel to be on the lookout for non-compliance. Such instances
might be documented with date- and time-stamped digital images, and provided to
the appropriate facility manager. Then, hopefully a little encouragement will
convince the scofflaws to clean up their act. If not, then perhaps human
resources might turn the screws a bit to help achieve the goal.

Hello Pest list-

I feel like I saw a webinar long ago where a person mentioned their museum
gives out a "tightly sealed container" to all new staff as a welcome basket
type thing. In this container was a bunch of "welcome to the museum type
stuff", but the container itself was for the staff member to keep food in at
their desk.

I am wondering if anyone else remembers that webinar, and if any other
institutions are doing some sort of program like this. If your institution
does something like this, would you say overall it's a good or bad direction to
head down? It seems like there can be different angles on it.

Interested to hear people's thoughts.

Thanks,
Todd
