Hi Ashley,

  1. The L. africanus mostly is little smaller than other Lyctus sp., like
L.brunneus or L.cavicollis. Because the ID of Lyctus could be very tricky, it's
better to consult an expert for Lyctus beetles. I send my samples always to be
sure, to the expert Dr Reiner Pospischil near Cologne (Germany)
  2. Here in Germany there is no regulation, to report the findig of Lyctus
africanus. I found this species many times in the last 10 years in Museums and
Collections in Germany. Basically it's no reason, because Lyctus africanus is
bound to indoor rooms.

What kind of wood was infested?

Best, Stephan

Betreff: [PestList] African Powderpost Beetle?

Hi Everyone!

I am currently assisting with the management of a pest infestation affecting a
painting that recently arrived in Berlin from Africa, via Art Basel. This week,
we observed a significant emergence of insects from the painting's stretcher
bars.

I have two questions:
1. I am fairly certain the pest is likely to be the African Powderpost Beetle
Lyctus africanus, however, the images I received are not optimal for
identification and I would appreciate a second opinion (see attached).

2. As this is a non-native species, does anyone in Germany know the best way to
report this incident? Should it be reported?

Thank you in advance!

Best,
