I mis-typed the scientific names or left out information about several of the species in the Dirty Dozen of museum pests in my initial email. Sorry about that. Here are those corrections:

Juli 2024 14:48 An: pestlist@googlegroups.com Betreff: [PestList] Re: Two questions regarding monitoring und glue traps Hi Claudia, Here is some information to help answer your questions regarding insect monitoring: 1. How long can you use glue traps if they remain free of dust and insects? Is there still an expiry date when they should be replaced? If the traps are free of dust and insects, and still remain tacky (To test tackiness, lightly tap your finger on the glue. If the holds onto your finger as you pull it away, then it is still working), then they are good to continue using. There is no expiration date. Some glues will dry out and lose tackiness though, especially in higher temperatures with lower humidities, so you need to check older traps for tackiness more frequently. 2. Is there a relation between the number of glue traps per room and the number of pests that is still tolerable or at which you can say that there is no pest infestation? In other words, does it make a difference whether I discover 1-2 or 10-20 pests in a trap and if so, how high can this number be? There are lots of moving parts in an equation to answer these questions. Some institutions have less tolerance for the number of insects in a trap more than others based on their collections. The time between checking the traps plays a big role (Is it in 1-week that you captured 20 insects or 6-months?). The species of insect that is being captured also plays a part. For instance, 3 psocids (Booklice) in a trap in 1-week is much less concerning than 3 webbing clothes moths in that trap. Some rules of thumb to go by: If you are capturing insects of major importance in museums (What we like to call the Dirty Dozen), in a blunder trap (trap with no pheromone or food attractant), you should inspect the area for possible sources and immediately and begin a pheromone monitoring program in that area. Action Thresholds- After placing your traps, you will need to keep an eye on the activity level. Record the number of high risk insects in the traps once a month. The following details how you should respond to your trap catches. (All numbers are based on single traps in one month's time) 1-9 high risk insects per trap in 1 month This is a lower level infestation. You are unlikely to see much damage to wool, fur, wood, or feather items. You are unlikely to easily locate the larval stage on wool fur or feather items. You will need to take stock of your at-risk items and try to pinpoint the infestation using pheromone traps and inspection techniques. 10-15 high risk insects per trap in 1 month This is a moderate infestation level. You may begin to see some damage to wool, fur, wood, or feather items. At this stage, it is sometimes possible to locate the larval stage on wool fur or feather items or see holes and frass in wood. You will need to take stock of your at-risk items. More than likely, there will be a single wool, fur, wood, or feather item that is causing the problem. Locating and eliminating the infested item will need to take place to reduce the population. Use the trap with the largest population of insects to help locate the item. It should be nearby. Over 16 high risk insects per trap in 1 month This is a high level of infestation. You will see damage to wool, fur, wood, or feather items. At this point, it is possible to locate the larval stage on the infested items. You will need to take stock of your at-risk items. You are also likely to see insects flying or crawling around your space. More than likely, there will be more than one item that is causing the problem. Locating and eliminating these infested items will need to take place to reduce the population. Use the trap with the largest populations of moths to help locate the items. They should be nearby. The Dirty Dozen of Museum Pests 1. Webbing Clothes Moth, Tineola bisselliella 2. Varied Carpet Beetle, Anthrenus verbasci 3. Black Carpet Beetle, Attagenus unicolor 4. Casemaking (case-bearing)Clothes Moth, Tinea pellionella 5. Cigarette Beetle (Tobacco Beetle), Lasioderma serricorne 6. Drugstore Beetle (Biscuit Beetle), Stegobium panaceum 7. Furniture Beetle, Anobium punctatum 8. Powderpost Beetle, Lyctid spp. 9. Odd Beetle, Thylodrius contractus 10. Common Carpet Beetle (Buffalo Carpet Beetle), Anthrenus scrophulariae 11. Gray Silverfish, Ctenolepisma longicaudatum 12. Common Silverfish, Lepisma saccharina * Note: This is simply a list of some of the most common and damaging insect pests to museums. Identification of any insect in a trap should be made to check on the amount of risk it poses to collections. There are many other insect species that can cause major damage to museum objects. Exercise caution when opening attachments or clicking links, especially from unknown senders. Dear Community I work in a library and am responsible for IPM. I now have two general questions about monitoring/glue traps and hope that I've come to the right place with these two questions. 1. How long can you use glue traps if they remain free of dust and insects? Is there still an expiry date when they should be replaced? 2. Is there a relation between the number of glue traps per room and the number of pests that is still tolerable or at which you can say that there is no pest infestation? In other words, does it make a difference whether I discover 1-2 or 10-20 pests in a trap and if so, how high can this number be? I hope I have expressed myself clearly and am looking forward to hearing from you.
