You can try gently brushing the surface with a cotton swab to see if it rolls onto itself or, if inactive, it will brush off the wood into a powder. You can also try using a UV light to see if it illuminates. Some molds will have a white illumination. Hope this helps! It's hard to tell of the close up but the substance looks like it may be a fatty material like wax.
