Alex, I anticipate you wish to ‘release’ the still living wee beasties outside of your facility. I – and many others here – might wonder whether this is rational or practical, but far be it for me to question the intent.
One might, perhaps, ‘capture’ digital images of the little wanderers as they enter an arena defined by the field of view of a camera. That provides the monitoring aspect. Now, how to safely (for them) transport the interlopers to another place? A gust of wind from a vacuum or blower might direct the quarry through a portal to the great outdoors. Alternatively, a small treadmill might serve as a moving sidewalk of sorts to evict the uninvited guests. In the event you want to keep the beasts in residence (but why??), then just skip the transport system and rely on a camera. I understand the desire to be ‘humane’, but this might be a bit extreme. If rodents are present, then I’d recommend traps other than those reliant on adhesive. If arthropods are the target, then glue traps would seem the most practical strategy. Good luck with your endeavors, and may your precious accessions be protected. -Rich Richard J. I'm working in an archive, undertaking a large pest monitoring programme. Recently, there has been an increased interest in moving away from the standard of glue traps and changing to a more ethical method. I'd love to try an ethical catch and release method for pest monitoring. However we are interested in monitoring pests as small as booklice up to spiders. The size range make creating a trap that won't exclude a pest or allow another one to escape the trap quite difficult. In the first instance does anyone have any resources/ideas or thoughts on ways I could create a catch and release trapping system? It would need to be something that sits on the floor, and relatively flat to the floor as well to allow the smaller pests to crawl in. I have no idea if this is possible or just a pipe dream but any thoughts or ideas would be welcome.
