It can be done, but with care.  Before imbedding any insect in epoxy resin, one
must first carefully soak it in some sort of detergent so air bubbles will not
adhere to the specimen or labeling when the epoxy is curing.
The pouring must be done in three stages:
1.    In some sort of enclosure, first pour a plain, clear layer of resin and
let it set.2.    Next, arrange the specimen and clear Mylar labels before the
next pour.  After you are satisfied with the arrangement, lightly spray this
layer with the detergent.  Then pour enough epoxy to cover the specimens and
labeling.3.    Finally, after the second, encapsulating layer has set, pour the
final layer of epoxy.
If you have a bunch of specimens to be made into specimen blocks, you may want
to contact Carolina Biological Supply Co. in Burlington, NC for making your
blocks.
Many years ago, I had them make a set of 10 different kinds of insect blocks
for my firm.  I supplied enough insects for a total of 24 sets of 10 for use in
training programs for a very large pest management firm, for which I was the
technical director responsible for teaching field technicians.  I left a set of
10 for each branch office, along with course outlines, so they could conduct
their own training programs.

{}-->Hello,    Seeing how much the appearance in silverfish alters with drying,
I would definitely go for Gretchen’s advice if the purpose is keeping it for
later ID reference.     Has anyone on the Pestlist tried epoxy resin encasing
for preserving silverfish? I wonder if they can be casted fresh without
changing over time once encased. It would be great if someone has experience
they could share on this!    Antonia Reime Aabø Preservation Advisor Arkiv Øst

Emne: RE: [PestList] Silverfish ID    Hi Christina,    The easiest way to
preserve them would be to place them in a small vial and fill the vial with 70%
alcohol (Ethanol or Isopropyl), then seal the vial.

Betreff: [PestList] Silverfish ID   Hello everyone,   My name is Cristina
Rufino and I work at the Science Museum, University of Coimbra, Portugal
(Zoology Collections).   I need help to identify one silverfish from my pest
monitoring program at the museum where I work. Normally I capture them dead and
in a bad shape and this time it is alive and maybe it can be IS to species
level.    Yesterday I caught 2 alive, here is a picture of one of them, in
attachment.   What's the best way to preserve them to further id, keep them
dry, or they can be preserved in alcohol?   Best regards, Cristina Rufino
