This insect is not “attacking” the sculpture. 

I would say, the infestation which lead to the bore holes / galleries took 
place while the tree still was standing (= alive). 

  (due to the shape of the bore holes and the orientation of the cracks)

The insect in the picture is more likely “using” the holes.
