Hi Jo,

Nice photographs! The first photo looks like a psocid or book lice, which
makes sense in the environment you describe.
https://museumpests.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/book-lice.pdf. The second
looks like a drain fly
https://museumpests.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Fact-Sheet-Drain-Fly.pdf.
Both like high humidity and indicate a potential mold problem. Improve
housekeeping and reduction of humidity is recommended. If you can add improved
air flow (a fan). Good luck

Subject: [PestList] RE: pests in our new building

Hello all,
Here are a few insects found in our new building not yet open to the public, in
enclosed storage areas, that are currently only housing a few tools. These
rooms do tend to get a little more humid the central open areas of our
building. We are in Wisconsin and typically warm and humid this time of year.
My images are on the large side, so I will send in 2 emails.

The first image is of an insect that looks like a tiny black speck to the naked
eye, and we have been seeing them for months, our contracted pest control
company ID’d them as fungus gnats, but when we viewed them under the
microscope, they do not match up with fungus gnat photos. They were only found
in the traps on the first floor of the building.

Image 2 is a small flying insect, about 5 Mil. Long

I’m hoping to find out if we have anything of concern to the collection, as
well if any of them are indicators of other things that may be happening with
the environment in our new building. Thanks all for taking a look, Jo

Laurent, thank you for all of that information from your father....very cool.
Please let dad know that I was just sharing a picture because this is the first
time I have seen these two spider. That they are my entertainment during porch
coffee as well as that I do not use pesticide as I grow ornamental bamboo which
is pest resistant. Thank you!! JTV

Hello everyone.

My dad, confirms.

The spider is indeed a female Leucage venusta, seen from underneath. The first
description was made in Georgia (USA), from a male, in 1841, under the name
Eipera venusta by french arachnologist Walckenaer.
The name is inspired by the goddess Venus, for its beauty. The species is
characterised by its green legs.
It is now classified in the Tetragnathidae family.
To my father’s knowledge it is only found in the US and Canada so far, where it
is also referred as “Orchard Spider”.
My dad added the following picture, where you can see it in all its glory.
He also questions why on earth one would ever consider it a “pest”!? Unless one
wants to include it on a list of victims of pesticides... Good point.

Have a great week.

My father is a renowned French arachnologist. I’ll ask him but that may take
