Todd,

The pheromones for wood boring beetles such as the furniture beetle, Anobium
punctatum or powderpost beetles, Lychtid sp. have either never been identified
or they are so difficult of a synthesis process that they are not currently
being made. 15 - 20 years ago, there was a commercially available pheromone for
Anobium punctatum, but the lab in the UK quit producing this pheromone. I
assume that the effort of the synthesis did not match the profits made. Insects
Limited attempted the synthesis years ago and gave up after a year and a half
of attempts and failures. There is always a chance that new synthesis routes
are figured out for Anobium or that new research on the pheromone for Lychtid
beetles emerge. We anxiously await those breakthroughs.

In the meantime, UV Light traps are effective at attracting adult wood boring
beetles for monitoring purposes. The lights needs to be directed away from any
collection material as they will cause degradation. Any standard light trap
used for attracting flies will work. Also, wooden beams or individual pieces of
wood can have tissue paper attached to them using a mixture of methyl cellulose
and water. After the paper dries and adheres to the surface of the wood, new
emergence holes can be noted to tell you if there is current activity in that
wood. These are the monitoring tools that we have at this point.

Regards,

Pat Kelley

Subject: [pestlist] Wood Borer Pheromone

Hello Group,

Does anyone know if there are pheromone lures out there designed to attract
different types of wood boring beetles?
If yes, and you had positive results with them, do you happen to remember the
brand and/or where you got them?

Thanks,
Todd
