Another approach would be to write a little fixup script that turns the ASCII variants into the non-ASCII variants, and then you could bind it to a function key to translate the current line. That has the advantage that you could use it on a script someone else sends you as well if you find the ASCII workarounds too visually offensive.

That would be really nice, and would go along way to counter my (probably unreasonable) fear of non-ASCII in the core language. Being able to easily switch between ASCII/non-ASCII using the Perl 6 equivalent of perltidy would be excellent.
