I agree. The biggest bottleneck is the number of times this (and other) build tools programs are invoked by 'make'. But figuring out how to avoid that is both beyond my understanding and beyond the original scope of this ticket. So I'm closing this ticket. If someone has an idea how to reduce the number of times 'make' invokes this program, we can open a new RT. Thank you very much. kid51
