FWIW: This test was consistently passing for me on Linux up thru Dec 29. Along with several other tests, it was failing for me on Linux on Dec 31 -- but it was *not* hanging and preventing 'make test' from proceeding. That hanging began yesterday (Jan 3) and has continued to the present -- notwithstanding 'make realclean' x (n>1) and even blowing away my sandbox completely.
