I think the correct fix for this issue would be two patches to Configure.pl: First, given the existing choice for $cc, pick the appropriate $cxx compiler. Second, given the existing choices for $cc and $cxx, pick the appropriate value for $link. I doubt that just guessing based on the name alone will be sufficient. It will probably be necessary to actually try the commands out.
This seems likely.
FWIW, since I have no Solaris machines available, patches for it follow the standard "I have no machine of type X handy" rules -- if they're claimed to work and make the current situation less bad they go in. Not a *great* policy, but...
