Not to be a wet-blanket grammar nazi, but the sentence you give as an
example isn't proper English. "Then" is an adverb,* not a conjugation.

    The suspect drank half a dozen double whiskeys;
    then he drove into a lake.

    The suspect drank half a dozen double whiskeys
    and then drove into a lake.
