One important safety tip for the bandwidth-impaired. Add the -z3 flag 
to your cvs updates, like so:

    cvs -z3 update

That'll use gzip compression on the data stream, which'll make a 
*big* difference on your speeds if you're on a slowish stream. (If 
you have CPU to burn, you might try a higher number with z. It's the 
same switch as gzip takes, so you can go up to -z9)
