Fifth, it makes the writing of "match anything but newline" into an explicit [^\n], which I consider a good thing. Of course, all this is minor stuff. But I can't get my head around parse trees and grammars, so I'll continue to fiddle around spraying a bit of grafitti here and there on the bikeshed. -- ralph
