I'd like to add my own answer, a non-technical reason:

I suspect many people do it for the same reason I do it, for fun,
satisfaction,
and to really learn how to build a wheel and _prove_ I can do it.

I think this is a great reason.

A beneficial side effect is you end up with a lot of "subject matter"
experts associated with your project.
