IIRC this is a bad thing (as was concluded on p5p a couple of years ago).
There discussion about why (on balance) it's a bad thing [mangling patches
being one of the reasons] and IIRC instructions on how to turn it off in
the discussion. It may well also be the thing adding the dots. (maybe not)

IIRC. I use mutt, so I don't remember the details. I think Dan was part of
the discussion, and I find this in one of his messages.
