Then I guess that either space sensitive '.' is the answer, or '_'. I personally
prefer the space sensitive '.' because it is compatible with perl5, and I think
people would have less difficulty with it even if it was doing double duty in 
the language. And its visually easy to spot the difference between the two
constructs.

But if it is going to be another character, I'd definitely go with '_' over '~'.
At least then we could say _= and =_, although that looks bizarre to me..

I think its really time to have a vote on this, I think that all that has been 
said about this issue has been said...
