Oh, my. I fear I may have ruffled some feathers here. I apologize; I was
hoping to spark a debate, not a flame war. Could we all please take a step
back and cool off for a bit, and not let this get personal?

I'm afraid it may seem like I'm ranting about Perl 5's regular expressions,
when I only wanted to raise a minor point for discussion and debate. I'm
actually a big fan of Perl 5's regular expressions; they're the best in the
world (to my knowledge), and often imitated -- for good reason. Does that
mean it's impossible to refine or improve them? (I'll leave that question
on the table for the moment, and hope for some calm discussion this time!)

I have a number of messages to respond to, but I was foolish to launch this
discussion today, because I'm operating on a serious sleep debt. I've just
been reading about the subject (which is pretty interesting), so I should
have known better than to get into this, but I didn't really expect the
suggestion to be so controversial...

I'll try to catch up on my sleep before responding to the rest of these
messages rather than trying to respond tonight. If I don't get to them
tomorrow, I will try to respond over the weekend. (I'll try to touch on
the sleep debt subject, but not too much since it's quite off-topic.)

Sorry for the commotion, folks. I'll try to pick this up when I've had
enough sleep to comment intelligently on the subject...
