Well if you want to place that restriction on perl6 so be it but in perl5 I can say tie $a[4],'Something'; Indeed that is exactly how tied arrays work - they (automatically) add 'p' magic (internal tie) to their elements. Tk apps to this all the time : $parent->Lable(-textvariable => \$somehash{'Foo'}); The reference is just to get the actual element rather than a copy. Tk then ties the actual element so it can see STORE ops and up date label. -- Nick Ing-Simmons
