AUBURN UNIVERSITY INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST Auburn University is seeking candidates for the position of Information Technology Specialist for the AU Libraries. Under the supervision of the Director of Library Technology, develops library-oriented software applications as needed, a duty that may include modifying and adapting open-source software applications or utilities. Works with AUL faculty and staff on digital library projects requiring in-house coding; may also work with faculty and staff from other departments on similar projects. Writes custom scripts for routine library functions (e.g., managing displays on interactive information kiosks, writing cron jobs, etc.). Serves as a backup System Administrator. In this capacity, helps AUL Systems staff manage the Library's Solaris, Linux, and Windows server computers, including software upgrades and patches, security, and backup. Installs, configures, maintains, and (if necessary) extends third-party software applications (e.g. Integrated Library Systems, digital content-management software, document-delivery software, etc.). Shares a rotating weekly schedule of evening and weekend on-call duty. Represents the AU Libraries in appropriate groups and committees on-campus, regionally, and nationally. Minimum qualifications for consideration are a Master's Degree and one year of experience OR a Bachelor's degree and two years of experience OR an Associate degree and five years of experience OR High School or equivalent and seven years of experience. Experience requirements: Thorough knowledge of at least one high-level programming or scripting language (e.g. C/C++, Java, PHP, or Perl) and experience developing custom applications using at least one of these languages. Experience administering Linux, Solaris, or other Unix servers, including shell scripting; or the ability to learn how to administer servers with these operating systems. Ability to clearly document all software development projects and programs. Effective interpersonal and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of users and support staff. Proven ability to successfully initiate, track, and manage multiple detail-oriented projects simultaneously.
Desired qualifications include: Experience with Oracle or other relational database management systems (e.g. MySQL or PostGres) and SQL. Experience with Javascript, CGI, or XML/XSLT. Knowledge of trends in open-source software development, especially open-source software with relevance to libraries. Knowledge of Windows XP and Mac OS X. Experience working in an academic library environment, especially experience with digital library projects. Candidates with four-year college degrees in computer science, MIS, or a related field highly desired. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
