This announcement has been posted to multiple lists. Please excuse any duplication. Thank you. Dear colleagues,
Are you interested in learning more about Open Source and how it could be used in your library? Interested in processing MARC data with Perl? Nylink is sponsoring two events at Queens Borough Public Library on October 28th and 29th, 2004. MARC Processing With Perl A hands-on workshop presented by Ed Summers October 28th, 2004, 9 AM - 4 PM Central Library, Queens Borough Public Library, Jamaica, NY Have you ever wanted to create MARC records for your ILS based on data in another format? Have you ever received large batches of MARC records which you wanted to programmatically update? Have you ever wanted to update your ILS MARC data in a way that your vendor does not support? Have you ever wanted to leverage your MARC metadata in new ways external from your ILS? Are you curious how open source projects like Koha, Jake and RefDB work with MARC data? If you answered yes to any of these questions then you might be interested in learning more about the MARC/Perl toolkit. MARC/Perl is an open source extension to the popular Perl programming language for working with MARC data. Catalogers, system administrators and programmers can use MARC/Perl to create, enhance and leverage their MARC data in new ways. Workshop attendees can expect to learn the basics of Perl programming, and how to use MARC/Perl to easily create, and modify existing MARC data at this hands-on workshop. About the presenter: Ed Summers started the MARC/Perl project in 1999, and continues to work with a group of developers to support and further extend the software. He is currently working as a Senior Software Engineer at Follett Corporation in Illinois. Open Source Software in Libraries October 29th, 2004, 9 AM - 4 PM Flushing Branch, Queens Borough Public Library Are you interested in learning more about Open Source software and how it might be used in your library? Open Source Software in Libraries will focus on the relevance of open source to the library community, and will include an overview of open source and how and why it is important for libraries, along with presentations on how open source is being used by libraries in New York State. This is a golden opportunity to hear about specific open source solutions to common library problems as well as the broader issues of using open source in their libraries.
