Thanks for the pointer to USEMARCON. I hadn't heard about it, and the topic
of UNIMARC/MARC21 has definitely come up in the past.

Good idea! I just downloaded it. It does have a license agreement, which would
have to be looked at pretty closely, but it seems pretty lenient at first
glance. It's c++ so it should be fast, and would be a nice experiment in 
building a Perl wrapper. Any takers? I bought Extending and Embedding Perl [1]
last year, and have been looking for a good excuse to use it :)
