I've been using the Active State package manager GUI to manage my Perl installation on my Windows XP box. I've not been able to find any way to tell the PPM that I want an installation of a certain release level of the Perl package. I can check for individual modules that can be upgraded, and install the latest version, but that isn't what I'm asking about.
Specifically, when the next major release of Perl rolls around (if (POSSIBLE_INCOMPATIBILITIES == TRUE) { $major= TRUE }), I'd like to be able to choose whether or not to upgrade to that package--and more importantly, when I want to upgrade. (Like NOT in the middle of a project!) I'd still like to be able to get the latest fixes and enhancements of what I've got (perl -v says I have v5.10.0). However, PPM does not seem to deal to the Perl version as a whole--it just deals with versions of individual modules. Is this just a fact I have to like or lump, or is there a way to do this that I haven't discovered?
To reiterate, I'm looking for a way to tell PPM "patch my Perl to V5.11 for all installed modules", or "install the new V5.12 in a separate place so I can test it for compatibility". Maybe there's a way to do this on the command line?
use Leniency::help;
my $info = help_dumb_user($profound_apology_for_my_ignorance);
Thanks,
Peter
