Subject: Lib and Site Conflicts in PPM, Upgrading Perl Cleanly?

With build 822, site/lib is searched first, then lib, then the cwd - ie
site/lib takes priority.
However, the order is different for builds prior to 819 (or thereabouts) -
where lib is searched first, followed by site/lib, and then the cwd.

I'm not sure precisely which build was the first to change the @INC order.
I've assumed below that it was build 819 (but it could have been build 818
.... it was certainly one or the other.)

You can check the @INC order by running 'perl -V'. At the end of the
'perl -V' output is an @INC listing, and the search order is the same as
listed there.

I think that simply installing over the top should be fine unless:

1) You're updating to a version that's not binary-compatible with your
current version (eg updating from 5.6.x to 5.8.x);

2) You're updating from pre-819 to 819 or later. (This is because of the
changes mentioned above to the @INC order. I believe that if you try to
update from pre-819 to 820 or later you'll be warned that it's necessary to
do a fresh install ... and the same warning should have been given when
updating from pre-819 to 819, but was overlooked in this particular
instance.)

There could, of course, be other gotchas that I've overlooked.

I think, too, that with build 819 onwards, perl/site/lib ships an an empty
folder. The files that were once found in perl/site/lib with pre-819 builds
are included in perl/lib with builds 819 onwards - along with the other
files that always were (and still are) part of the perl/lib folder.

I wouldn't be surprised if the problems you are facing are a result of
having (at some stage) updated from pre-819 to 819 or later, without making
any allowances for these changes .... but then I also wouldn't be surprised
if they weren't :-)

You might need to post to the ppm mailing list if you don't get satisfactory
help here.

Cheers,
Rob
