It depends on the threading model of the COM object.. Perl OLE is not
multithreading capable yet (and probably won't be any time soon (But,
leave it to Jan to prove me wrong). But yes, in general, Perl can call
COM components (like Outlook, Excel, Word, ChartDirector and others)
with Win32::OLE.

Sometimes perl has issues calling certain functions because of special
requirements on the variables passed to the methods. Enter,
Win32::OLE::Variant to help you mangle a perl variable to what the COM
object author is expecting (this is normally not required, but on
occasion a little tweaking is helpful).

I mention ChartDirector (www.advsofteng.com) for this one reason, the
author was willing to help me find out why it wasn't working in Perl
even though he didn't support perl directly, namely it did work in COM
and VB and should work in Perl. As it turns out, ChartDirector required
one of those Win32::OLE::Variant manglings, and after he told me what
function to look at, I was able to make it work by mangling the perl
variable passed in, with Win32::OLE::Variant module to successfully draw
the chart.

Good luck! OLE is a lot of fun once you get used to it.

Subject: OEAPI from NEXTRA

Does anyone have any experience with the OEAPI product from NEKTRA? Here
are the "General Features" from their web site:

. All the functionality is implemented in a COM object.
. A demo application written in Visual Basic is included in the
package.
. A demo application written in Visual C++ is included in the package.
. A small demo application written in Dephi is included in the package.
. Plugin support as a dll that run in the same space of the OE. You
will be able to run inside OE.

Is it likely that a perl module could plug in to this API? I will
contact NEKTRA, but I wanted to get some idea what other perl users
might know about it.

Thanks,

Phil
