Maybe you should look into "mplayer" (not wmp), it would be strange for this one not to have what you ask since it's a very powerful command line player (probably the best for Linux and Windows if you have an old computer). At least the config files are raw text if there is no option to change the audio device (it would come as a surprise to me though).

Well, I have it installed here now, and it can play songs... but I can't see any options for selecting which device to play on.

On the mplayer man page (available here :
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/man/en/mplayer.1.html ) you search under
"Audio output drivers" and you find this line :
-------------
***dsound (Windows only)*

        DirectX DirectSound audio output driver

        device=<devicenum>

        Sets the device number to use. Playing a file with -v will show a list
of available devices.

-------------

Don't know if this work (I have only one sound card myself, seems like
win shows 2 devices but I think they're the same, just not the same name
so it don't change anything for me), but you can try.
Good luck ! :-)
(and RTFM ;-) by the way : mplayer is so powerful and versatile it's
hard to remember all its stuff)
