With ActiveState perl it's simplest if you use Microsoft's MSVC++ 6 (Visual Studio)as the compiler, but if you don't have a Microsoft compiler and don't want to purchase one you can install ExtUtils::FakeConfig from CPAN (as per the instructions in the readme that ship with it) and use the freely available MinGW compiler - http://www.mingw.org/download.shtml . (There *was* a MinGW installer there that installed all you need, but it was posing problems so has been removed. Currently I think you have to install the packages you want individually. Yell out if you need help working out what you need to install.) Otoh, if you already have a Microsoft compiler and 'sys/types.h' is not being found, then perhaps you just need to run 'vcvars32.bat' - which will set up environment variables that allow sys/types.h (and other files) to be found.
